The wear of slurry pumps not only leads to increased production operating costs but also reduces production efficiency. This article summarizes the hazards of slurry pump wear.

Analysis on the harmfulness of slurry pump wear

The flow components of a slurry pump refer to the parts that come into direct contact with the solid-liquid two-phase fluid. For the flow components of a slurry pump, wear is a very common phenomenon.

Since the slurry transported by the slurry pump generally contains highly destructive abrasive particles, when these particles pass over the surface of the pump's flow components at a certain speed, they inevitably exert force on the material's surface. The repeated action of a large number of particles causes material loss, leading to wear.

For a long time, the severe wear of slurry pump flow components has been an unavoidable problem for designers and operators. The wear of slurry pumps is very serious and poses great hazards.

Wear not only leads to material loss in the slurry pump, such as a reduction in the outer diameter of the impeller and shortening of the blades, which deteriorates the performance of the slurry pump and reduces the head, but it also increases various clearance fits, thereby reducing volumetric efficiency and flow.

This causes the actual operating conditions to deviate from the design conditions, reducing the pump's efficiency and worsening operational stability, affecting the normal operation of the slurry pump.

After the surface material of the worn flow components is lost, the flow boundary changes, often worsening the flow state within the pump. In severe cases, it can induce cavitation, leading to a combined effect of wear and cavitation, causing the pump to wear faster and its performance to decline more rapidly.

Wear will also lead to other negative impacts such as:
1. Failure of the slurry pump shaft seal, severe leakage, increased vibration, and louder noise, which further deteriorates the operating environment.

2. The flow components of the slurry pump are generally made of high-cost wear-resistant materials, and the material consumption caused by wear will increase production costs.

3. Wear reduces the efficiency of the pump, leading to significant energy waste.

4. Wear will accelerate the replacement frequency of the pump's flow components, increase maintenance and repair work, and raise the labor intensity of workers.

5. Moreover, severe wear can induce violent vibrations and noise, which is detrimental to the safe operation of the system and worsens the working environment, adversely affecting the health of operating and maintenance personnel.

Since slurry pumps are widely used in many industries, the material loss, energy waste, and environmental impact caused by slurry pump wear each year are enormous, which is inconsistent with the development concept of energy conservation and environmental friendliness. Therefore, strengthening research on the wear problem of slurry pumps and providing a basis for the anti-wear design of pumps is of great significance.
