Packing seal is a dynamic sealing device that generates a compressive force between the packing and the rotating and stationary parts through the self-tightening action of pre-tightening or medium pressure. It is mainly used in the moving parts of process machinery and equipment in the mechanical industry. This article lists the advantages and disadvantages of using packing seals in slurry pumps.

Advantages and disadvantages of using packing seals in slurry pumps

Advantages of packing seals:

1)It has a certain degree of elastic plasticity. When the pump packing is axially compressed, it can generate a large radial compressive force to achieve sealing; when the machine and shaft have vibrations or eccentricities, and the packing wears, it can provide a certain compensatory ability (followability).

2)It has a certain strength. This prevents the pump packing from being damaged before it wears out.

3)It has high chemical stability. This means it has good compatibility with sealing fluids and lubricants, is not corroded or swollen by fluid media, and does not contaminate the media.

4)It has good impermeability. Since many fluid media have a certain permeation effect on various fibrous materials, the packing requires a high density in its organizational structure. Therefore, during the production of packing by Sanchang Pump Industry, it often needs to be impregnated and filled with corresponding fillers and lubricants.

5)It has good thermal conductivity. It can quickly dissipate heat and can withstand a certain high temperature when friction generates heat.

6)It has good self-lubricating properties. That is,the friction coefficientis low and wear-resistant.

7)The manufacturing process of packing is simple, easy to assemble and disassemble, and inexpensive.

At the same time, there are few materials that can meet the above requirements, such as some metal soft packings, carbon fiber packings, flexible graphite packings, etc. They have good performance and a wide range of adaptability, but are relatively expensive. Some natural fiber packings, such as hemp, cotton, and wool, are not expensive but have slightly poorer performance and a narrower range of adaptability. Therefore, when selecting materials for pump packing, a comprehensive consideration of various requirements should be made.

Disadvantages of packing seals:

(1)The tight contact force of the packing seal comes from the axial pressure of the gland on the packing, which causes the packing to generate radial expansion force, resulting in significant friction between the packing and the shaft sleeve, thus requiring frequent replacement of the worn shaft sleeve.

(2)It requires a loss of 10% to 15% of the shaft power to overcome the friction between the shaft sleeve and the packing to achieve sealing.

(3)Leakage from packing seals can easily allow liquid to enter the bearing box, causing damage to the bearings.

(4)During use, packing seals often operate in abnormal conditions, exacerbating the wear of the packing and damage to the shaft sleeve, leading to a vicious cycle in the use of packing seals.

(5)To dissipate the friction heat between the packing and the shaft or shaft sleeve, a certain amount of leakage is necessary, resulting in the loss of cooling water. In summary, the advantages of packing seals are that they are simple and easy to implement, while the disadvantages are that they require a large amount of maintenance work, have significant power loss, and due to always having a certain amount of leakage, they are not suitable for transporting flammable, explosive, toxic, and valuable liquids.
