[The Twenty-Four Solar Terms: White Dew]
Bai Lu is the 15th of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms and the third solar term of autumn. By the time Bai Lu arrives, the sweltering heat of summer has largely subsided, the weather grows cooler, and cold air gives rise to dew that condenses. In ancient times, the four seasons were associated with the five elements; autumn corresponds to metal, whose color is white. Since “white” is used to describe autumnal dew, the term “Bai Lu” — “White Dew” — came into being.
During the White Dew solar term, the summer heat gradually fades, the autumn air grows crisp and clear, the sweet fragrance of osmanthus fills the breeze, and migratory birds such as wild geese and swallows begin their southward journey to escape the cold, while various bird species start stockpiling food for the winter.
During the White Dew season, it is customary to collect dew, drink White Dew tea, and brew White Dew rice wine. In some regions, there is also a tradition of eating longan, savoring sweet potatoes, and gathering “ten kinds of white” foods to nourish the body—aligning with the autumnal season and quietly awaiting the crisp, clear days of fall.
As we enter the “White Dew” solar term, the most noticeable change is the growing temperature difference between day and night; at night, a faint chill begins to set in. Though the summer heat may not vanish overnight, the oppressive humidity gradually subsides, and mornings and evenings take on the coolness of autumn. The summer monsoon gives way to the winter monsoon, with cold air masses moving south more frequently. Meanwhile, as the sun’s direct rays shift southward, daylight hours in the Northern Hemisphere shorten and solar intensity weakens. Nights are often clear and cloudless, allowing the ground to radiate heat rapidly, which in turn accelerates the cooling process—hence the saying, “On White Dew and Autumn Equinox nights, each night grows a bit cooler.”
