Slurry pumps, as mechanical equipment widely used in many industries, have unique performance characteristics and broad application value. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor and maintain them during daily operations. This article briefly introduces the startup operation and daily monitoring and maintenance of slurry pumps.

Start-up operation and daily maintenance of slurry pump

1. Starting operation and monitoring of the slurry pump

1) Before starting the slurry pump, the pump inlet valve should be opened, and the pump outlet valve should be closed. After that, start the pump, and once the pump is running, slowly open the pump outlet valve. The size and speed of opening the pump outlet valve should be controlled to ensure that the pump does not vibrate and the motor does not exceed the rated current.

2) The starting of pumps in series also follows the above method. After starting the first-stage pump, the outlet valve of the last-stage pump can be opened slightly (the size should be about 1/4 of the rated current of the first-stage pump motor), and then the second and third-stage pumps can be started successively until the last-stage pump. After all series pumps are started, the outlet valve of the last-stage pump can be gradually opened wider, with the size and speed of opening controlled to ensure that the pump does not vibrate and that no stage pump motor exceeds the rated current.

3) The slurry pump is mainly aimed at conveying flow, so it is best to install a flow meter in the operation monitoring system to monitor whether the flow meets the requirements at any time. In systems with hydrocyclones, flushing systems, and filter press dewatering systems, it is also required to have a certain pressure at the outlet of the pipeline. Therefore, pressure gauges should also be installed in such systems to monitor whether the pressure meets the requirements.

4) In addition to monitoring flow and pressure during operation, the motor should also be monitored to ensure it does not exceed the rated current. Continuously check for abnormal phenomena in the oil seal, bearings, etc., and whether the pump is experiencing cavitation or overflow, and address these issues promptly.

2. Daily maintenance of the slurry pump

1) The suction pipeline system of the pump must not have any air leaks, and the inlet screen of the pump pit should meet the particle requirements that the pump can pass to prevent large particles or long fiber materials from entering the pump and causing blockages.

2) Replace easily damaged parts in a timely manner, ensure correct assembly during maintenance, and adjust the gaps reasonably to avoid tight friction.

3) The water pressure and water volume for the bearings must meet the specifications, and the tightness of the packing should be adjusted (or replaced) at any time to avoid causing leakage of slurry from the shaft seal. Also, replace the shaft sleeve in a timely manner.

4) When replacing bearings, ensure that the bearing assembly is dust-free, and the lubricating oil is clean. The bearing temperature during pump operation should generally not exceed 60-65°C, and the maximum should not exceed 75°C.

5) Ensure the coaxiality between the motor and the pump, and ensure that the elastic pads in the coupling are intact and correctly positioned. They should be replaced promptly if damaged.

6) Ensure that the pump assembly and pipeline system are installed correctly, securely, and reliably.
