The advantages of series operation of slurry pumps lie in the arrangement of multiple pumps in a single pump station, which facilitates equipment installation, maintenance, and operational management, while also reducing costs and enabling overall automation management. This article introduces several conditions that can ensure the efficient operation of slurry pumps in series.

Conditions for efficient and safe operation of slurry pumps in series

When connecting slurry pumps in series, the following aspects should be noted:

1. Selection of operating conditions for series slurry pumps

Calculate the total head and flow rate of clear water required under the current operating conditions, and use this as a basis to select a single-stage slurry pump. It is strictly prohibited to exceed the maximum working pressure that a single-stage pump can withstand when selecting a single-stage slurry pump.
After selecting the single-stage pump, the performance curve of the series pump can be obtained by superimposing the performance curves of the single-stage slurry pumps.

It is important to note that when selecting the number of series pumps, it is not advisable to calculate based on the maximum head of a single pump. Although this reduces the number of pumps and lowers initial construction costs, it is not economical in terms of long-term operation, as the higher the head of the slurry pump, the higher the slurry velocity.

2. Speed regulation of series slurry pumps

In long-distance slurry transportation, considering the changes in actual operating conditions and errors in selection calculations, it is generally recommended to use an installed speed regulation device (hydraulic coupler, variable frequency drive), typically installed on the first stage pump or the last stage pump.

3. Key design points for series slurry pump stations:

1. The axial load between wear-resistant pipes is higher than the operating load of a single-stage pump, so a special expansion pipe should be designed to connect the pipes to reduce the transmission of load.
2. The overall layout of the slurry pumps and wear-resistant pipes should ensure that the discharge port of each pump corresponds to the suction port of the next pump, reducing pipe support and axial load.
3. The pump station should be equipped with a shaft seal water pump that provides sufficient sealing water for the packing.

4. Starting methods for series slurry pumps

When slurry pumps are connected in series, the delivery pipeline is generally long, ranging from several kilometers to tens of kilometers. At the start of the pump, the resistance of the empty pipe is zero. If the slurry pump system is started directly, the low resistance can easily cause a large instantaneous flow, leading to cavitation and motor overload.
To overcome the above problems, it is recommended to use the following two starting methods:
1. The pump is stationary, fill it with clear water from the highest point, and then start simultaneously. This is also the most commonly used starting method.
2. Limit the flow of the slurry pump system for clear water filling, and then start in stages, with the flow rate at startup controlled to about 25% of the rated flow.
