What is cavitation?

Cavitation is the process in which bubbles form and collapse in a flowing liquid.

Cavitation damage is not only caused by mechanical forces but also accompanied by electrolysis, chemical corrosion, and other effects, leading to early damage of the flow components.

Mechanism of cavitation damage in slurry pumps.

Firstly, there is an inward explosion similar to vacuum cavitation damage.

Secondly, there is an accelerated impact effect after the gas-liquid separation of the particle medium in the slurry. Since these bubbles are lighter than the slurry, they are easily pushed by the rotating impeller to the volute and the front and rear wall surfaces, where they burst in the gaps of the wall and volute. The liquid that fills the voids quickly strikes the wall, and this frequent impact can cause material fatigue and spalling. The pits left after spalling are more likely to trap bubbles and can also form vortices, accelerating wall wear.

This type of damage is a combination of cavitation and high-speed swirling damage, leading to rapid damage of flow components, with the appearance of the damage resembling large honeycombs.

It is important to mention that gas cavitation and vacuum formation are two different concepts. Vacuum formation is caused by gas-liquid separation, while gas cavitation is caused by the dissolution of gas in liquid followed by rupture.
